Berlin – Sight seein’ and stein drinkin’

So back in October I went to Berlin with my girls to celebrate two of them turning 25! Whilst we did a lot of sightseeing we also drank a lot, and I mean a lot, of steins.

I thought I would share some of what we got up to and some of my favourite sights. I apologise in advance that this is a very picture heavy post but it is such a beautiful city with so much history I couldn’t not share!

Walking Tour:

So we went on one of the free walking tours and we were with a lady called Sadie who was amazing. She was so knowledgeable in the area and was a history buff who was well researched, I actually left learning so much! How free tours work is that basically you tip the guide at the end based on what you think it was worth.

Despite being severely hungover I managed to drag myself out of bed, I had a few too many steins the night before and I’m not very good on beer, but it was so worth the struggle.

On the tour we saw the Bardenburg Gates, Berlin Wall, the Nazi headquarters, checkpoint Charlie and so much more. You get to really learn about the city and it’s history.

Topography of Terrors

The Topography of Terror is an outdoor and indoor history museum which is situated in the Modern center on the site of the former Gestapo headquarters, documenting the horrors of Nazism. It is really sad to read everything but also interesting to learn about the history and timeline of events.

Reichstag building

The Reichstag building is a historic edifice in Berlin constructed to house the Imperial Diet, of the German Empire. The view is amazing but I would definitely recommend visit on a clearer day.

Berlin’s largest and oldest park, it was nice to visit a bit of greenery in a city. Plus we went in autumn and the leaves had fallen and it looked so pretty.

Holocaust Memorial and the Museum of Murdered Jews

This was one of the most harrowing and haunting things I have experience in my life. It was such a moving memorial and I would definitely worth a visit.

I have to say I was quite upset at the number of people who were climbing all over the memorial and taking silly posy pictures, to me it just showed a lack of respect, but I don’t know maybe that is just my thoughts.

East Side Gallery:

This was my absolute favourite thing to see, I am a huge fan of street art, and no I don’t mean graffiti tags, and I mean proper good street art!

The East Side Gallery is an international memorial for freedom. It is gallery where hundreds of people have shared their artwork on the Berlin Wall.

Aside from the gallery though, there is so many gorgeous piece of street art throughout the city, so keep your eyes open.

Evening fun:

I know Berlin is known for its techno clubs and obviously I would’ve loved to have visited Berghain but seriously the thought of queueing for somewhere for hours to be told I’m not cool enough to enter would have made me miserable.

So instead the girls and I enjoyed the local cuisine and a lot of steins. We found so many bars and we feel in love with the local beer places.

Local cuisine:

Bratwurst, Currywurst, Pork Knuckle – all the local dishes, we sampled them all. The food is like proper home cooked goodness and it is super hearty. I would probably avoid if you’re on a diet but we all need a treat from time to time.

Would I go back?

Yeah 100 per cent, I loved it. I think if I was to go back though, having now seen the majority of tourist attractions, I would definitely like to find more hidden gems.

Have you visited Berlin? What was your favourite part?

Love Leigh
